Leadwork Banks

Grade-4 lead is insufficient for the most exposed Shore Road positions at Banks — we use grade-5 lead on chimney stacks directly facing the combined Irish Sea and Ribble estuary salt loading, where the additional thickness provides meaningful extra protection against salt pitting.

Leadwork in Banks

Leadwork Specialists for Banks

Grade-4 lead is insufficient for the most exposed Shore Road positions at Banks — we use grade-5 lead on chimney stacks directly facing the combined Irish Sea and Ribble estuary salt loading, where the additional thickness provides meaningful extra protection against salt pitting.

The combined coastal exposure at Banks means all lead work is specified with patination oil applied on completion — without patination, fresh lead surface oxides unevenly in the first months and the pitting process begins at the earliest oxide formation points.

Specification for Banks

Grade-5 lead on exposed Shore Road properties. Grade-4 on more sheltered Banks positions. Patination oil applied on all Banks lead installations.

Leadwork Reviews from Banks

★★★★★

“Shore Road chimney — grade-5 lead specified without being asked. They explained the difference and why the extra cost was justified.”

Helen R. · Shore Road, Banks PR9
★★★★★

“Patination oil applied on completion. Previous contractors hadn't done this — the lead had oxidised unevenly and started pitting faster.”

Ivan M. · Greaves Hall Avenue, Banks
★★★★★

“Grade-4 on our more sheltered Banks property. Grade-5 for the Shore Road houses, they explained. Correct differentiation.”

Our Process

How We Carry Out Lead Flashing Work

Step 1: Lead Assessment

Existing lead is assessed by visual inspection and probe test. We check: surface pitting depth, the presence of through-failures, the condition of mechanical fixings, and whether previous sealant repairs are present. This determines whether targeted repair or full replacement is the correct recommendation.

Step 2: Removal and Surface Preparation

Old lead is stripped fully. Any sealant residue is removed from the surrounding masonry and tile surfaces before new lead is cut. The mortar joints in the step flashing positions are raked out to the correct depth to receive the lead wedge fixing.

Step 3: Lead Cutting, Dressing and Fixing

All lead is cut on site to the required profile. Step flashings are individually dressed to follow the tile profile on each course. Soakers are fitted beneath each tile course. Back gutter and apron are correctly lapped with the step flashings. All lead is mechanically wedge-fixed into the raked mortar joint — no adhesive-only fixing. Call 01704 620 427 for a free lead assessment.

Step 4: Repointing and Patination Oil

Mortar joints are re-pointed with the correct mix for the property — marine mortar on coastal properties, NHL lime on pre-1900 brick. Patination oil is applied to the lead surface on completion to prevent uneven initial oxidation and to inhibit early-stage surface pitting.

Booking

Booking and What to Expect

Free Lead Assessment

Lead flashing work is always preceded by a free on-roof assessment — we access the chimney or valley, probe-test the existing lead, and identify whether targeted repair or full replacement is the correct recommendation. Call 01704 620 427 to arrange. Most assessments are booked within 48–72 hours.

On the Day

Chimney lead replacement on a standard stack takes one full day. Valley lead replacement depends on valley length — typically half a day to a full day per valley. We provide temporary weatherproofing where the lead is stripped before new lead can be fitted in the same visit.

After Completion

Patination oil is applied on completion to protect the fresh lead surface during initial oxidation. The mortar pointing around the flashings should be inspected at the next annual roof check — pointing that was sound at installation may need re-dressing after the first frost season as the new mortar cures. Call 01704 620 427 for any post-completion queries.
