Where pitting affects more than 25-30% of the valley surface, or where the lead has been previously patched with sealant, full valley replacement is the correct call. Step flashings are the visible stepped lead sections up the side of a chimney stack. Soakers are the small hidden lead pieces tucked under each tile course at the chimney sides. The back gutter is the lead section behind the chimney at the top, which collects water coming down the slope and directs it around the stack. All three elements together form a complete chimney flashing system — a failure in any one causes ingress.
