GRP fibreglass, EPDM rubber and felt flat roofing for Southport homes. Correctly detailed drainage for the high winter rainfall volumes on the Sefton coast. Free written quotes.
Southport's flat roofs face higher rainfall intensity and stronger winds than inland areas. Falls and outlet positioning matter more here — we specify a minimum 1:40 fall on all new flat roofing installations and check outlet positioning against winter rainfall intensity before design is signed off.
The high proportion of Victorian and Edwardian properties with rear extensions across Birkdale, Churchtown and the central PR9 postcodes creates significant demand for flat roof replacement. Many of these extensions carry felt roofs installed in the 1980s or 1990s that are now past their design life.
Ponding from insufficient drainage fall is the most visible flat roof problem — outlets that were adequate inland become insufficient when Sefton coast winter rainfall volumes arrive. Blistering and delamination of older felt systems is the second most common issue. EPDM edge bead failures at upstand flashings from salt air adhesive degradation are the third.

01704 620 427“New GRP flat roof on rear extension. Very tidy job, properly detailed drainage, explained exactly why the old design had failed.”
“Garage roof in EPDM. They checked the fall first — previous roofer had left a low spot that was pooling. New roof correctly graded and outlet moved.”
“Conservatory flat roof section repaired in GRP rather than sealant. Held through two wet winters.”
GRP fibreglass is the correct first-choice specification for most Southport properties — fully seamless, no joints for coastal rain to penetrate, 25–30 year design life. EPDM is appropriate for larger areas where GRP is less practical. Felt is acceptable on a budget with three-layer specification, but the maintenance interval in Southport's coastal rainfall is shorter than inland. We advise on the right system at the free survey.
Southport receives significantly more autumn and winter rainfall than the UK average. A flat roof with a fall of less than 1:80 will pond water — standing water degrades any membrane system faster regardless of material quality. We measure and confirm the fall before specifying or quoting, and target a minimum 1:40 on all new Southport flat roof installations.
We always strip the existing covering and inspect the decking before installing a new system. Soft spots in the deck indicate moisture ingress and rot — installing a new membrane over a damaged substrate traps moisture and causes the new system to fail early. Deck replacement where necessary is included transparently in our flat roofing quotes.
Correctly installed flat roofing in Southport requires four things that many installers overlook: confirmed drainage fall, adequate outlet sizing, correct upstand height, and coastal-appropriate adhesive. We check all four before the installation specification is finalised.
We measure the existing fall angle using a digital level across the full roof area before quoting. If the fall is below 1:80, we specify correction as part of the installation — either by raising the deck at the outlet end or lowering the high end. We target a minimum 1:40 fall on all Southport flat roofing. Without adequate fall, even a perfect membrane system will degrade faster from standing water.
We always strip the existing covering before installing a new system. The deck beneath is inspected for moisture, rot and delamination. On 1960s–80s extensions across Ainsdale, Crossens and Maghull, we frequently find chipboard or OSB decking that has absorbed moisture through years of roofing failure. Rotted decking is replaced before any new membrane is applied — at a price agreed and confirmed before we proceed.
GRP (glass reinforced polyester) is applied cold in two stages: the fibreglass laminate is laid and consolidated, followed by a topcoat that seals and colours the finished surface. All upstands are taken to a minimum 150mm height. Edge trim is mechanically fixed at 300mm centres — not adhesive-only, which fails faster in coastal conditions. Outlets are fitted with flow-rated covers sized for Southport's December rainfall intensity of 132mm.
EPDM is laid as a single sheet where roof geometry allows, minimising seams. Upstand bonding uses marine-grade contact adhesive throughout — standard indoor-rated adhesive bond-strength reduces significantly in salt air environments within three to five years. The edge trim is clamped, not adhesive-only. On Southport properties we allow a 48-hour cure period before any foot traffic or loading.

A standard flat roof replacement on a rear extension takes one to two days for GRP, one day for EPDM on a straightforward installation. During stripping on day one, the space below the roof should be clear and protected — we lay dust sheets and advise customers to clear the room. During GRP application the resin has an odour for several hours after application and we ventilate the area well. Access to the rear of the property is maintained throughout. Most customers find the disruption minimal.
GRP is a multi-layer system: fibreglass matting laid in resin, built up to a specified thickness, then topcoated. It is applied cold but sets hard like a rigid shell. EPDM is a single-ply system: a single rubber sheet bonded to the deck and sealed at edges and upstands. Both are seamless within their installation area. GRP is slightly harder to repair if damaged — the repair process requires the same chemistry as the original installation. EPDM is more forgiving of minor damage — a cut or puncture can be repaired with a patch and adhesive. For Southport coastal conditions, both are appropriate — GRP's rigid shell profile is preferred by some customers for its finished appearance.
GRP requires almost no maintenance in the first 15–20 years. An annual visual check — confirming that the outlet is clear and flowing freely, and that no surface cracking has appeared at upstand terminations — takes 10 minutes and is sufficient. EPDM benefits from an annual check of the edge trim and upstand bond, and the outlet cover should be cleared of debris. Avoid walking on any flat roof unless necessary — GRP can tolerate occasional foot traffic, EPDM is more susceptible to puncture from sharp objects.
Small extension: £900–£2,500. Garage roof: £1,200–£3,000. Larger flat roofs: £4,000–£6,000+. Free no-obligation quotes.
GRP: 25–30 years. EPDM: 20–25 years. Felt: 10–15 years. Correct drainage fall is critical in Southport's high rainfall.
For most properties yes. GRP is fully seamless and handles coastal UV and rain loading better than felt.
Yes — 10-year written workmanship guarantee. GRP additionally carries the manufacturer's 25-year material warranty.
In many cases yes. We assess honestly and only recommend full replacement when the existing system genuinely cannot be repaired effectively.
GRP fibreglass flat roofs can generally be accessed for light maintenance. EPDM rubber can be walked on carefully. Felt flat roofs should be accessed as rarely as possible — foot traffic accelerates surface degradation. For anything beyond clearing the outlet, call us rather than attempting to walk on it.
Like-for-like replacement of an existing flat roof covering generally does not require planning permission. Raising the parapet height, changing the roof profile, or work on a listed building or in a conservation area may need consent. We check and advise at the free survey.
